Russia is the world’s biggest country in size at 17 million square kilometres. Its most famous cities are Moscow and St Petersburg, but its beating heart is the vast hinterland known as the Steppe. It borders Mongolia, China and the Central Asian Republics. Around this territory , Vladimir Putin has endorsed an ideology called "Eurasianism." And it's influenced by Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

Gary Saul Morson is professor of arts and humanities at Northwestern University in the US. He writes about Eurasianism in the current issue of the New York Review of Books.
